Originating in Ancient Egypt, backgammon, or taouleh, spread throughout Europe with the return of the Crusades in the 12th century. This backgammon set, half felt, half wood, plays on discomfort by imposing two modes of play: the hushed atmosphere of European boudoirs contrasts with the popular and often noisy game played in the East and South.
